What will water do to sugar or bread or oil when mixed up?

EXPLORING WATER

How does water interacts with other materials? In these activities, we will find out what water at room temperature will do to these four items: Sugar, Bread, Rock Pebbles, and Oil.
What we need

  • 2 small containers and a mixer such as a spoon or a wooden stick
  • Water at room temperature, sugar, cooking oil, a piece of bread, and rock pebbles.
  • A working top such as a table or countertop.
  • Water data sheet

PROCESS

WATER AND SUGAR

Pour water into your container halfway and sugar into the other container halfway. Pour the water into the sugar container. Stir gently for 2 minutes.
What happened to the sugar? Talk about your findings. Record your findings in your datasheet.

Sugar and water

Where did the sugar go?

WATER AND COOKING OIL

Pour water into your container halfway and cooking oil into the other container halfway. Pour the water into the cooking oil container. Stir gently for 2 minutes. What happened to the cooking oil? Talk about your findings. Record your findings in your datasheet.

Water and cooking oil

Did the two liquids mix well?

WATER AND BREAD

Pour water into your container halfway and break a piece of bread into the other container halfway. Pour the water into the bread container. Wait for 2 minutes. What happened to the bread? Talk about your findings. Record your findings in your datasheet.

WATER AND ROCK PEBBLES

Pour water into your container halfway and some rock pebbles into the other container halfway. Pour the water into the pebbles container. Wait for 2 minutes. What happened to the rock pebbles? Talk about your findings. Record your findings in your datasheet.
